Ebook About Winter, 1364.The King is dead.Defeated on the field of Poitiers, Jean Le Bon, King of France, honoured his treaty with England until his death. His son and heir, Charles V, has no intention of doing the same. War is coming and the predators are circling.Sir Thomas Blackstone, Edward III's Master of War, has been tasked with securing Brittany for England. In the throes of battle, he rescues a young boy, sole witness to the final living breaths of the Queen of Castile. The secret the boy carries is a spark deadly enough to ignite conflict on a new front – a front the English cannot afford to fight on.So Blackstone is ordered south to Castile, across the mountains to shepherd Don Pedro, King of Castile, to safety. Accompanied only by a small detachment of his men and a band of Moorish cavalrymen loyal to the king, every step takes Blackstone further into uncertain territory, deeper into an unyielding snare. For the Master of War, the shadow of death is always present.Praise for David Gilman:'The level of suspense is ratcheted up to a truly brutal level' SHARON PENMAN'A gripping ride' WILBUR SMITH'Gilman does heart pounding action superlatively' THE TIMES'Like a punch from a mailed fist, Master of War is a gripping chronicle of pitched battle, treachery and cruelty' ROBERT FABBRIBook Shadow of the Hawk (Master of War Book 7) Review :
This series has become the standard for the genre. Blackstone is a character that rivals Uhtred in all respects and his irascible band of brothers are immensely entertaining. The dialogue, descriptions, historical content, characters, etc. in these books are all masterfully written and developed. I simply could not put this book down and am now suffering from the fact that I will have to wait a long time to read the next installment, and although every one of these "Master of War" books is certainly worth the wait, it doesn't make it any easier. My advice to new prospective readers is to read them all in order and just enjoy the experience. Gilman is an author in his absolute prime and at the height of his powers, and these Master of War books demonstrate that fact completely. I always feel an obligation to offer some critique or suggestion that might add some balance when I take the time to write a review, since I believe that reviews that are honestly written may offer some meaningful guidance to those who are looking for a truly "good read", but anything of the sort that I offered here would be disingenuous at best and simply false at worst. These books are the best of the best, period. The characters surrounding Blackstone continue their warrior dialogue and fight like the devil for their leader and each other, but this storyline lacked invention and depended on a purpose less than noble.Furthermore, the youngster introduced to add a modicum of intrigue and to show the soft side of vicious warriors as they take him under wings does not work well, especially when he is allowed to be killed in order to get a revengeful denouement.Compared to previous books in this series, this one leaves a reader feeling cheated.
